Sarek National Park is one of Europes's last great wilderness areas and poses a significant challenge even to experienced hikers.
Sarek is one of Sweden's oldest national parks, established in 1909. With no mobile phone coverage, marked trails or mountain huts, it offers a genuine wilderness experience. There are no roads leading into the park, and it takes at least a full day's hike to reach the park boundary.
The landscape is characterised by high mountains and deep valleys. The area includes some of Sweden's highest mountains, which are home to around one hundred glaciers. Their meltwater forms major watercourses and creates extensive delta systems in the valleys.
Anyone planning to hike in Sarek needs to be well prepared and aware of how quickly weather conditions and the environment can change in the Swedish mountains. Temperatures, wind speeds and rainfall can change quickly, making river crossings unsafe or impossible due to rising water levels. Careful planning, experience of mountain hiking and equipment suitable for all weather conditions are strongly recommended. Sarek is not for inexperienced hikers since it poses challenges even for the most experienced hikers.
